Rock Hill band 4 on the Floor Cranks up the Country at Westville Pub
By Amy Jones
Rock Hill's 4 On the Floor makes country music with a revved up engine from a pick-up truck heart. With classic country artists like Buck Owens as their guide and punk bands like Black Flag as their edgy inspiration, this five piece aims to make rowdy country the right way.
"We're a drinking band with a country problem," said lead singer Nathan Palmer. Playing their first show in the mountains to date, 4 On the Floor cranks up at the Westville Pub Saturday night.
"We're not much of a tears in your beer kind of band, " said Palmer. "We play maybe three slow songs."
What they do in large number is fast, unrelenting, two- minute country tunes that would otherwise blow right through you. That is, if you weren't actually sitting in front of this wild ensemble.
"Well I've been known to put a girl's face in my crotch," said Palmer. "That happens."
With a rock mentality and a country sensibility, 4 on the Floor eagerly await their chance to prove themselves in Asheville. "The mountains have always been a more progressive place," Palmer said. "People there are always looking for something new."
While Palmer remains the standout element of the band, ironically he formed this group with little more than a love of music and really no instrumental talent or experience. Teaming up with musically inclined friends and fellow country music lovers, the band has changed line-up several times since their 2001 formation but the focus remains the same.
"We've been called trucker pop and I think that's fair," said Palmer In fact, Palmer would like to take title a step further by including CB Radio into the gig somehow. "I think Citizens Band radio is our last free communication left. I'd like to turn it on during a show and give a shout out through the line."
With a handle called "Deer Head" to his fellow CB mates, Palmer and band have varied backgrounds that combine for one force behind this rocking country act. From bluegrass to punk these fellow Rock Hill players hit the floor. There's Lee Goodwin and Glenn Jones on guitar, Jeff Faulkner on bass and Mike Elder on drums.
"We're not trying to reinvent the wheel," said Palmer. "We're playing the greats or originals that sound like them. It's great music."
The band heads to Europe this fall, "Deer Head" and all.
